Man accused of stealing $3,000 French bulldog is possibly tied to other dog theftsComments (3) January 10, 2011 |  1:16pm

Police are investigating whether a Duarte man arrested in the theft of a $3,000 French bulldog in Santa Ana was behind similar dog thefts in nearby cities.

Darryl Jerome Cole, 20, allegedly went to the home of dog breeder Lorinda Tucker on Dec. 14 after responding to an advertisement about a French bulldog she wanted to sell, said Jim Amormino, spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

After Tucker brought out the bulldog, named Macy, Cole allegedly pushed her to the ground and ran off with the dog, police said.

Investigators discovered similar thefts of bulldogs in Chino, Temecula and Costa Mesa and immediately suspected Cole, who was on parole for a prior dog theft conviction, Amormino said.

When sheriff’s deputies searched Cole’s home Thursday, they found Macy and another French bulldog that was reported stolen in a September robbery in Chino, police said.

Cole admitted to police he planned to mate the two dogs and sell their offspring, Amormino said. Although no other dogs were found at his home, Costa Mesa and Temecula police suspect Cole was responsible for similar dog snatchings earlier in the year, Amormino said.

Cole was held at Central Men’s Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

I don't know who's worse: the breeder (there are too many unwanted dogs in the world to breed more) or the thief.
