Nationally, Labrador Retriever Also Remains America's Most Popular Breed As the Bulldog Quietly Creeps Up the List
NEW YORK, Jan. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Once again, the Labrador Retriever took Dallas' top spot in the American Kennel Club's (AKC®) 2010 ranking of the most popular AKC-registered dog breeds in U.S.
"Mirroring the national trend, the popularity of both the Bulldog and French Bulldog is on the rise in Dallas," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "The Bulldog moved up one spot in 2010, while the French Bulldog cracked Dallas' top ten list, reaching the 10th ranking."

Among the Changes in Dallas' Rankings:
The Golden Retriever remains popular in Dallas despite a drop in the national rankings.Although not as popular in other cities, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a regular Dallas favorite, ranking 6th in the city's top ten this year. The AKC also announced its nationwide registration statistics today, revealing that for the 20th consecutive year the Labrador Retriever is the most popular purebred dog in America. However, this year's list includes some shakeups in the top 10 – the Beagle overtook the Golden Retriever for the 4th spot, and the Bulldog took 6th place away from the Boxer, who dropped to 7th in 2010.
The Bulldog has been steadily rising up the list over the past decade, going from 21st to 6th. While impressive, it is not the biggest mover – that distinction goes to the French Bulldog. The Frenchie jumped 50 spots (from 71st to 21st) over the past 10 years.
In addition, the AKC expanded its litter of registered breeds on January 1 to welcome the Norwegian Lundehund, the Xoloitzcuintli and the Entlebucher Mountain Dog – growing next year's list of Most Popular Breeds to 170 dogs.

HandoutMartha Stewart and her bulldogs, from the cover of Living magazineNational Post Staff January 14, 2011 – 12:57 pm Martha Stewart is known for her way with animals, but a softly whispered “goodbye” to her dog Francesca sent the lifestyle guru to a hospital with a split lip on Thursday. In a message on her blog, Stewart said she’d bent down to say “goodbye” to the French bulldog, but the act had the unintended effect of frightening it. The dog jerked away but hit Stewart’s face with such force that it felt like being hit with a “boxing glove” she said.
Stewart said she called her daughter Alexis, who whisked her to North Western Hospital, where she was looked over by a plastic surgeon. Stewart’s stable manager, Betsy Perreten, took photos of the injured domestic diva’s face, one of which shows Stewart with a large cut on the side of her mouth. All is well, as Stewart posted a photo of the surgeon, Dr. Nolan, adding stitches to her swollen lip.
Meanwhile, from the other side of the pond, Johnny Depp recounts his recent experience pet-sitting Brad Pitt’s bulldog. From the U.K. Sun:
“Everything was cool — until I sat down on the bed to take my shoes off. Jacques pounced on me from behind and kept jumping around on me. He’s not small. Around 175lbs of dog was hurled at me, which felt like about 300lbs. I shouted for help and luckily someone came to take that beast off me.”
Celebrities and their bulldogs, huh? You never know what to expect!
